Four Decks Unique to Competitive Frontier

Hello, everyone! I’m Aaron Torres, and this is my first Frontier article for Matchup Gurus. For those that aren’t familiar with what Frontier is, it is a player-made, non-rotating format that consists of cards released in Standard from Magic 2015 onwards. It has existed for quite some time now, and while some would refer to the format as one that is “dying, if not dead”, it remains living and growing in the communities that have come to form from it. The focus of my colu...

The Blood Moon Decks of Modern

Hello again everyone! About three months back, I wrote a primer for RW Prison, or Sun and Moon. For those who might not know, this is a Modern prison deck that uses Blood Moon and Chalice of the Void to lock its opponent out of the game, and uses up to six boardwipes to clear their board once it has it’s lock pieces. The deck then wins with planeswalkers, usually using Nahiri, the Harbinger to find an Emrakul, the Aeons Torn and win, although it has several other planeswalkers that can win...

Modern Abzan Elves Primer

Hello everyone! My name is Sylvan Schrank, and today I am going to be writing a guide to my favorite Modern deck, Elves. Elves has been a powerful tribal deck since Urza’s Saga block, when the printing of Priest of Titania created the first iteration of the archetype, Elfball. This deck looked to flood the board with Elves and then won with a Priest of TItania-fueled Fireball to kill the opponent. In the Modern era though, Elves has gotten several useful tools that have made it a powerhous...

Introductions: New Editor-in-Chief, New Writers

It's my distinct pleasure to introduce our new writing staff of James Goeke-Munch, Aaron Torres and Sylvan Schrank. James, @TheGoekeMunch, is a Peasant Cube fanatic and runs the Untap Open League's Pauper events. He will naturally be writing largely on that format. Aaron (@som_nambulist) will be covering the Frontier format for us and Sylvan (@filthyc4sual1) will be writing about Modern. These are all people I hand picked for this project. They're both talented pl...

The Energy Between Us

Temur Energy has been around the format for a long time. It was originally the shell for Copycat (before its banning), Aetherworks Marvel (before its banning), and now continues to sit at the top of the metagame, with a few splashes here and there. What makes it so powerful? Why can nothing knock this giant off it's pedestal? Temur Energy (and its cousin, 4C Energy), is probably the most "fair" deck in Standard right now. It doesn't play any broken cards, it doesn't...

The Lost Art of Durdling

Standard is fast. Decks swing for 3 damage on turn 2, 4/4s for 2 sometimes swing for an additional damage, Lightning Strike is a powerful force in the format, and all around, every deck is tuned to be playing undercosted threats as densely as they possibly can. Even Ripjaw Raptor isn't undercosted enough to make the cut in the myriad flavors of Energy deck that can be found at any large event. And yet, despite all of this hustle and these desperate races to count to 20, one deck routinely...

Dashing Hopes

When I first started playing Magic back in 2008, I remember my best friend showing me his huge collection of what looked to be some of the most powerful cards I could imagine, for a brand new player.  He had started during Time Spiral, and had a ton of commons and uncommons from that block that I would play, hate, or love. My first intro deck was the "Life Drain" Black/White deck, so I had been on the lookout for some of the best cards to fit into my deck. My absolute favorite car...

Enlightenment: Soul-Scar Mage

I like Red. I play a lot of Red. I only own one commander deck that doesn't have red. I like the theme of red, the passion and the fury of red. I get sad when red isn't playable in a format.     I bought into Ramunap Red the Friday before Paulo won the Pro Tour with the deck, and I was incredibly happy. I scoured over every article, read tons of discussion posts on /r/spikes and bathed in the sweet, sweet glow of some mountains. I tuned, I tested, and I brought it ...

2 Weeks of Play/Draw Data

Matt here with some data 2 weeks in. CrazyShip will be in on Monday with some much cool data visualization looking at these numbers. With over 250 matches and 600 games logged, I want to look at a play/draw breakdown across formats and decks. What do you think is the difference between being on the play or on the draw? If I'm in a generic 50/50 matchup, I'd say being on the play puts me somewhere around 55% to win, maybe a little less. I'm a big Pauper fan, though, and I play some...

This Week on Matchup Guru

Two major improvements went in this week: Data is symmetrical now, which means overnight, the number of matches shown virtually doubled. Where before, if you logged a match as Burn against Tron, a user checking the Tron data wouldn't have seen a matchup against Burn. Mainly because coding is hard. But now each match is logged from both sides, so if Matchup Guru users are beating up on poor little Mardu Vehicles, now the data will show it. You can view and edit old matches. It's e...

Deck Meditations: Temur Energy

Hello readers, and welcome to our first "Deck Meditations"!  What are Deck Mediations? It's a weekly column by Matchup Guru's RKDnc on top decks of the week, or spicy new brews that are posting results in competiive leagues.   Following right after Grand Prix Denver, we got the option to see Brad Nelson take home the prize with a deck that's been around for a while, but hasn't quite been posting the results it should have been: Temur Energy! Temur...

100 Matches in 2 Days!

Wow, what a launch weekend. I really didn't expect to see so much uptake so quickly. Just over 2 days since launch, and we're already over 100 matches in the system. Modern is leading the way with 45, then pauper with 30, standard with 22 and legacy bringing up the rear with 6. I guess that speaks to the power of posting on /r/ModernMagic and /r/Pauper. The overall most popular deck so far is Pauper Elves. Looks like somebody logged 2 full leagues. Then is Grixis Death's Shadow...

Next Steps for Matchup Guru

So much to add and we love hearing your feedback. (Though right now we're struggling with a mail server, so drop us a line on Reddit. Polishing the site a bit is the top priority. We want to make Matchup Guru as easy to use and straightforward as possible. After that, we'd like to expand beyond just leagues. Format challenges would be great to log. There's even value in tracking your FNM matches or your practice room games. Of course, we'll add filters so that you can separ...

More Games on the Way

We're hoping Matchup Guru really catches on for MTG, our first love. But down the road there are other games we'd like to add, starting with Hearthstone and Gwent. But beyond card games, what else is there? Is matchup data valuable in games like League of Legends or Overwatch?

Why Matchup Guru?

About a month ago, Wizards decided to continue its trend of providing less and less data. As has been explained better elsewhere, that isn't great for the community. Matchup Guru gives the community a chance to push back against the limiting of information through crowdsourcing.

Coming soon!

Welcome to Matchup Guru. Excuse the mess. I'm an idiot, so I deleted the articles I'd had here explaing why I created Matchup Guru and what is to come. I'll republish those ASAP, but in the meantime, Matchup Guru is here to log your league matches and track your stats. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/yxJuJpoYr5I" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></ifra...
